OCTOBER PLAYER OF THE MONTH INTERVIEW:
DAVID SANSOM
November 2006
Full Name: David Michael Sansom
Any Nicknames: Sammo, Joey, Sir
Favourite Football Club: Queens Park Rangers
Favourite Food: Lamb Madras
Favourite Music Artist: Michael Whelan when he sings in the church choir
What is the thing you like most about Kings AFC?
I like the name, and the team look great in the red strip.
What are your plans and ambitions regarding football for this year?
To play more and get a few clean sheets under the belt
If you could play for any football club who would it be and why?
I’d play for England RFU against the All Blacks – they could do with some help at the moment. I’d play in the backs, probably at centre, and make penetrating runs all day! Wrong shape ball, I know, but it’s still football. More gentlemanly too, and hand offs are completely legal, regardless of the opposition’s age!
What’s the best and worst thing so far about being a dad?
Being a Dad is great. Nothing bad as yet, apart from having pesky visitors all day. On the bright side, Evie’s response to meeting her Uncle ‘Pepperami’ Michael was to force out the biggest, wettest poo in her life to date!
Anymore kids?
Loads, hopefully enough for a Rugby Team (Union, not girly League).
Do you have any life ambitions?
When the family is a little more established we hope to go and work overseas. Somewhere underdeveloped that would think an average teacher like me was really good!
What animal do you think you are most like?
A horse – workmanlike and with really big thighs
What is King AFC’s biggest strength?
Their goalkeepers (not Adam though – he’s rubbish)
Who have you enjoyed playing with most this season?
I’ve really enjoyed playing with the Captain Gaywood. It’s been a long time since we’ve graced the same field with our flair and talent. Unfortunately, he’s lost some of it, but its fun none the less. We use to shout at each other a lot (he was usually at blame for most goals I conceded, probably all actually), but those days are gone and it’s great to be playing football again with my friend and brother.
How do you feel you have settled into your new club?
I feel I have settled in well. I know most peoples names well and can follow the unwritten rules of the club e.g. don’t argue with Stephen, always poke fun at Lee, avoid the infections on Marcus’ neck and don’t shower with Ben.
If not in goal where else would you like to play?
In my youth (Year 9, Bishop Ramsey School) I was a prolific striker (1 goal in 3). After three games they suggested I should go in goal. Still reckon I’ve got it though. Lee and I should do a swap one day!
Manager’s comments:
As a defender, I know only too well how much of a confidence booster it is to have a good goalkeeper behind you, and in Dave we have an outstanding shot stopper in our ranks. His communication has been excellent all year and some of the saves that he pulled out of the bag in the last month have been quite breathtaking. Despite not winning an individual man of the match award, I hope this award does show how much we appreciate having Dave between the sticks when he is available. I’m also delighted that the award coincides with the birth of Dave’s first child. Many congratulations once again and well done on winning the October Player of the Month award! Steve
